Understanding Congenital Heart Disease
Knowledge is the first step toward support and healing
What is CHD?
Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a structural problem with the heart that is present at birth. These conditions can involve the heart walls, heart valves, arteries, and veins near the heart, affecting how blood flows through the heart and to the rest of the body.
CHD is the most common type of birth defect, affecting approximately 1 in every 100 babies born worldwide. While some heart defects are simple and don't need treatment, others are complex and require multiple surgeries over several years.
Despite these challenges, with proper medical care and family support, most children with CHD can live healthy, active lives and grow up to be productive adults.
